The Wagon Above The World

- The wild and the wonderful -

Our Story
"We had an amazing time and everything was perfect - the Wagon, the hot tub, the view from the decking... all superb."

Our story

We fell in love with this place because of its wild feel, the abundance of nature all around us and the really quite remarkable views! Since arriving here in 2013 with our young family, we have planted a small woodland and an orchard and are continuing to improve the diversity of the wildflower meadow in which the wagon sits.

We are very aware of our eco footprint and have restored and repaired the Wagon using the most natural materials possible.

The fields are grazed with our well loved sheep who can be spied in the paddocks nearby and we land steward and garden organically.

& What Makes Us Special

If we had to try and sum it up in just a few words it might be - peace, privacy and panoramic views. All taken in from a sunken wood fired hot tub, nestled under brilliant stars, amid rolling hills and lush valleys. We are high up here - almost 1000 feet and really do feel on top of the world!

We want to offer you a luxurious immersion in nature; a place to retreat from day to day life in a space that is unique, comfortable and stylish.

The microcosm of our land sits within the hidden gem of Herefordshire's quintessentially beautiful English countryside.

We have the River Wye nearby and as we are at the borderland of England and Wales, we are lucky enough to also enjoy beautiful mountains, wild lakes and fabulous dark skies.

About the Wagon and your Stay

The story is that this lovely wagon was commissioned in the 1950s to be made by a woman who owned an amusement arcade somewhere on the South coast of England, so rather than a Showman's wagon, this is, in fact a Showwoman's wagon. Apparently it cost as much as some houses back then and looking at the solidity of the wagon and materials used to make it, this could well be true!

Inside the Wagon:

Outside the Wagon:

Step outdoors onto a spacious decking that runs the full length of the wagon. Under a covered area are deckchairs and table for lazing back in and enjoying the views. A hammock is also provided for total relaxation!

The star of the decking is the Japanese style Ofuru wood fired hot tub, which is sunk into the decking so you can step straight down into a steaming hot tub with your drink of choice without having to leave the deck.  When darkness falls, fairy lights add to the magical atmosphere, along with the sound of owls hooting and stars overhead.  There is a porch for storying coats and muddy wellies in inclement weather (a selection of wellies are provided where you park).

To one side of the wagon and its decking is a small orchard with fire pit area, again lit with fairy lights. Apples are for the taking when ripe!

We have tried to keep it's wonderful personality and glamour whilst creating a more modern aesthetic:. Almost all is the original; wood panelled walls, crystal glass lighting, wooden floor, copper fireplace, gas cooker, little bathroom, glass skylights with boats and even a built in drinks cabinet. We restored, repaired and renovated what was there including opening up the divide between kitchen and living room, sanding away the dark shiny wood and removing gas lights and an antiquated gas heating system!  We are very aware of our eco footprint and have taken care to reclaim and re-use materials where possible.

The kitchen is small but well equipped with everything we can think one would need during a stay in the wagon and there is a fridge and instant hot water. The bathroom has a little bath with overhead shower and a sink and flushing loo. We have added a retro record player and a selection of records in the living space, which guests love and the player also has a input for mobile phones, as well as radio and cd player. There are also various board games, some books and maps should you want to plan hiking trips. The bedroom has a comfortable standard double bed and all bedding and towels are organic cotton.

The wood burner heats up the wagon really well and we supply bags of logs and kindling for sale, or you are welcome to bring your own. In the winter months and cold weather we will stock up the log baskets in the wagon for your first night's stay.
